Trail Master Time Trials kick off huge 2002 Off-Road Race weekend at Crandon.
Crandon, WI --Trail Master Suspension is again providing the financial muscle to propel the qualifications for the most prestigious and lucrative off-road race in the country -- the 2002 BorgWarner World Championship Manufacturersâ^À^Ù Shootout -- to new heights. The company has announced it will pay $2,000 to the racer posting the fastest lap in the upcoming Trail Master Time Trials at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway. The award money is annually part of the largest purse in professional off-road racing.
The Trail Master Time Trials will be conducted Friday, August 30 at Crandon. Top 4x4 and 2-wheel drive pickup truck racers will be squaring off to qualify for the most important off-road race of the season. That race will be held Sunday at the BorgWarner World Championship Off-Road Races at Crandon this coming Labor Day Weekend. At stake in the qualifications will be entry into the Shootout and a chance to win the $100,000 BorgWarner Cup, a huge first place purse, and the mythical "King of Off-Road Racing" title for 2002.
The time trials begin at 1:00 p.m. and more than 25 trucks are expected to compete for 20 available positions. Drivers have two attempts to qualify on the 1.75 mile Crandon track. The 2002 Trail Master "Lap Master Award" of $2,000 will be presented to the fastest qualifier by Jim Chick, president, Trail Master Suspension, Corona, CA. The fastest single lap in track history was set last year in a Ford 4x4 by Jason Baldwin, who blistered the Crandon dirt by posting a time of 1:24.50, breaking the old mark set in 1998 by Jamey Flannery of 1:25:95. Baldwin is currently "The Fastest Off-Road Racer Alive." Also at last yearsâ^À^Ù Time Trials a new track record was set for 2-wheel drive trucks. Carl Renezeder posted a time of 1:26:64. "It is a privilege to once again be associated with Crandon International Off-Road Raceway and be involved with the BorgWarner World Championships and the most important off-road race of the year as time trials sponsor," said Chick.
Since 1995, single lap times at Crandon have fallen dramatically. For example, off-road icon Walker Evans set the record in 1995 in a 2-wheel drive pickup truck at 1:30:40. Since then, racers have slashed nearly six seconds off one-lap times. "Better equipment, such as Trail Master shocks and performance tires from BF Goodrich and Goodyear and high tech Ford, Chevy and Toyota trucks are contributing to the faster speeds," observed Cliff Flannery, president, Crandon Raceway.
The Trail Master Time Trials segment of the BorgWarner Shootout is part of off-road racingâ^À^Ùs largest single race purse. In addition to the Trail Master "Lap Master Award" of $2,000, prize money is also paid to runners-up and various class racers. The BorgWarner World Championship Off-Road Races, featuring Lucas Oil Championship Off-Road Racing action, are held three consecutive days over Labor Day weekend, August 30 to September 1 at Crandon. This season is the 33rd annual at the track.
