Future World announces with great sadness that the 2000 and 2002 Belgian Rally Champion, Rocco Theunissen, died of meningitis in Malta.
Tribute to Rocco Theunissen (1973-2003)
Aged 30, Rocco Theunissen died of meningitis in Malta. Theunissen finished 4th of the last Rally Boucles de Spa despite a heavy headache. He flew to Malta to get a rest just after the rally, still complaining about terrible headaches. Doctors from the local hospital have diagnosed meningitis. He died Saturday April 19th morning.
Rocco was born in the Netherlands on February 3rd 1973. He has started his rally career at the age of 22, running Dutch regional events at the wheel of a hand-made Nissan Sunny. Jumping to Subaru Impreza Gr.N, he won the Dutch National Championship on 1996 before winning the 1997 Dutch International Gr.N competition. Rocco Theunissen joined the Belgian rally team Future World in 1998 when he started to compete with Gr.A cars. In 1998, he won the Belgian Division 2 Rally Championship with an Impreza Gr.A and bought a Toyota Corolla WRC for the 1999 season. This car was the one of all his maiden wins : West European Champion (1999), twice Dutch International Champion (1999 & 2000) and twice Belgian Division 1 Champion (2000 & 2002). Rally has always been a hobby for this well performing gentleman, working as commercial director in the family business Milo Coats.
