POMONA, Ca. (Nov. 12) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, met Steve Johns in the first round of eliminations at the 15th Annual Auto Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.
Johns had a slight advantage at the starting line and held on to take the win over Whisnant. Johns would run a 7.515 / 177.67 mph to Whisnant's 7.546 / 178.87 mph.
"That was a good close race," said Whisnant. "I would have liked for it to have ended better, but we will get him next time.
Whisnant ends the year 12th in the Pro Stock Truck points standings. He talked about the past season.
"We started out the season running good. We stumbled in Gainesville, and then finished the season strong. The DNQ's in Gainesville, St. Louis and Chicago really hurt us in the points.
"We went through such a learning curve with the new Kurt motors at mid-season, that we never really caught back up. In hindsight I think we probably should have brought the new motors on a little slower, but there is nothing we can do about that now. I really would have like to finish the year in the top ten, but I am confident we will be able to finish higher next season.
Whisnant and his team will now return to their shop in Stockbridge, Ga. to start working on next year.
"We are going to go home now and refocus for next season. We plan on doing a lot of testing. As soon as we get home we are going to the track and test with Warren and Kurt. We still believe in the Kurt motors and feel like we just need to put a little more time into it.
"We will also spend a lot of time evaluating our chassis program. This truck class is not all about horsepower. Chassis set-up and how the truck travels down the track is also very important. We feel like it will only benefit our program to spend some time working on our chassis program.
"We are going to spend the winter refining and fine tuning our racing program. It is too bad that we ran out of races, because this team is hungry for a win. We will be back here in February ready to race, and ready to win."
