INDIANAPOLIS (September 3, 2004) The first night of qualifying for the 50th annual Mac Tools U. S. Nationals is in the books and Doug Kalitta is the number one qualifier in Top Fuel, Gary Densham in Funny Car, Jason Line in Pro Stock and GT Tonglet in Pro Stock Bike are all leading after the first day of racing.

"It was cool to have my car on the flags in the city leading up to the race," said Kilitta referring to the pole banners on display in Indianapolis. "The run was a good one for us and it worked out pretty well, it was nice to get that one behind us."

For Densham the top spot will help calm his nerves during the weekend.

"Every U. S. Nationals is special but with this racing being the 50th it is extra special, said Densham following his run of 4.795 seconds at 320.28mph. "I've never been so nervous prior to a start of a race but the stands were packed and this is a great way to start the week."

In Pro Stock it was Jason Line as the top qualifier with a run of 6.810 seconds at 201.64mph and in Pro Stock Bike is was GT Tonglet 7.193 seconds with a speed of 186.92mph.

Prior to the start of the Top Fuel and Funny Car session the crowd was treated to a ribbon cutting ceremony to kick off the night featuring Tom Compton, President of the NHRA, Matt Whetstone, Indiana State Representative, and Ron Anderson, general manager of Indianapolis Raceway Park. Also before the session four Fuel Altered cars took to the track in a wild display of racing from years past.

On Saturday the day will start at 7:30 A. M. with Sportsman eliminations and the K & N Pro Bike Klash starts at 12:30 P. M.
