Tucson Pro National January warmups preview

NHRA professional racing teams will be testing in preparation for the upcoming 2003 NHRA POWERADE Drag Racing season at the Southwestern International Raceway, Tucson, Ariz. Track is located at 11300 S. Houghton Rd. Head east on I-10, exit 275.

NHRA professional racing teams will be testing in preparation for the upcoming 2003 NHRA POWERADE Drag Racing season at the Southwestern International Raceway, Tucson, Ariz. Track is located at 11300 S. Houghton Rd. Head east on I-10, exit 275. Travel south on 275, the track is located on the right. Dates will be Friday through Sunday, Jan. 24-26, 2003.

SCHEDULE:

FRIDAY, Jan 24 - Gates open at 8 a.m. Testing sessions will run from 10 a.m-5 p.m.

SATURDAY, Jan. 25 - Gates open at 8 a.m. Testing sessions will run from 10 a.m-5 p.m.

SUNDAY, Jan. 26 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Testing sessions will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

WHO: Many NHRA teams are participating, including:

* John Force, won his 10th consecutive and 12th overall NHRA Funny Car championship in 2002, also became only the third driver in major auto racing to earn 100 career victories, has 106 career wins.

* Brandon Bernstein, is the son of NHRA legend and six-time NHRA champion Kenny Bernstein, will take over the controls of the Budweiser dragster in 2003, is a leading candidate for 2003 AAA Road to the Future Award recognizing the NHRA's Rookie of the Year.

* Tony Pedregon, teammate of Force who battled his boss until the semifinals at the Auto Club Finals in Nov., won a career-best six events in 2002 finishing second in the points chase.

* Gary Densham, the veteran driver finished a career-best fourth in the Funny Car standings last year winning two events and leading the points chase midway through the season.

* Del Worsham, finished third in the points chase for the second consecutive season in 2002 winning four events, poised to make charge towards first Funny Car title.

* Johnny Gray, teammate of Worsham and driver of the blue Checker Schuck's Kragen Funny Car, finished 10th in the Funny Car points in 2002.

* Rhonda Hartman-Smith, drives the FRAM dragster and is looking to capture her first NHRA victory in 2003, finished a career-best ninth in the Top Fuel points standings.

* John Smith, husband and teammate of Rhonda Hartman-Smith, drives the Prestone dragster, finished 10th in the Top Fuel points in 2002, also is assistant crew chief on both dragsters.

* Doug Herbert, equaled a career-best finish in the Top Fuel points standings, looks to equal late season performance that saw him earn two No. 1 qualifying awards in the final four events.
