Heartland Park Topeka
TOUGH DAY AT TOPEKA
TOPEKA, Kansas – After a strong qualifying performance on Saturday, changing weather and track conditions made it a short day for the Toyota contingent at the NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka in Topeka, Kansas, on Sunday.
With the hottest conditions of the weekend and a relatively green track after severe storms slammed the Topeka area on Saturday night, drivers found it tough to make a clean run through much of the early rounds on Sunday.
Del Worsham, Larry Dixon and Antron Brown all were unable to make a clean pass and were eliminated in the second round. Initially, all three drivers appeared to be on the way to victory, but Worsham and Brown smoked the tires and each lost runs that saw both of their competitors also fail to make it down the track clean. Dixon also led early, only to appear to have lost a cylinder at about the half-way point of his second-round run.
Both of the Morgan Lucas Racing cars were eliminated in the first round with Shawn Langdon falling to Terry McMillen, while Morgan Lucas also smoked the tires in his run.
With no Toyota Top Fuel car advancing past round two, it snapped a streak of seven consecutive victories by a Toyota-sponsored car in Top Fuel competition in winning the first six races this season, as well as the season finale in 2010.
Del Worsham continues to lead the point race at the mid-point of the 2011 campaign.
In Funny Cars, Cruz Pedregon also advanced to the second round before falling to series point leader Mike Neff in a close contest. On Saturday, Pedregon earned the number five qualifying position, his seventh consecutive top-five qualifying effort this season. Pedregon remains in fourth place.
The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series moves east to Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey, for the Super Nationals, June 3-5.
