WORSHAM, PEDREGON GIVE TOYOTA A NITRO POLE SWEEP AT ENGLISHTOWN
Del Worsham was the number one qualifier in Top Fuel, while Cruz Pedregon topped the Funny Car time charts to give Toyota a sweep of the Nitro pole positions in preparation for Sunday’s NHRA Super Nationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. The pole is the second of the season for Worsham, who has qualified in the top two in each of the last three races. After struggling in Friday’s first qualifying session, Worsham bounced back to run a 3.785 on Friday night as track conditions cooled to win the pole. He will be looking for his fourth win of the season on Sunday.
“When conditions like that came along, I’m glad that Alan Johnson is the tuner of my car. What a job he and the team did,” said Worsham. “We smoked the tires the first run on Friday after smoking the tires on my last run in Topeka. You think they might be conservative, but a guy like Alan just went right out there for the throat. We went from the outhouse to the penthouse in one run.”
In Funny Car action, Pedregon registered the fastest pass on Friday afternoon and then came back to go even faster in Saturday’s first session with a 4.048-second pass to take top qualifier honors, as well as earn six bonus points in qualifying. The two-time Funny Car champ has qualified in the top-five in each of the season’s first eight events and it marks the 18th consecutive race that Pedregon has qualified in the top-six.
Worsham’s Al-Anabi Toyota teammate Larry Dixon will start fourth on Sunday, one spot ahead of fellow Toyota-sponsored driver Antron Brown. Morgan Lucas Racing teammates Shawn Langdon and Morgan Lucas qualified seventh and 10th to set up an in-team duel in Sunday’s first round.
Worsham, Dixon and Brown enter tomorrow’s eliminations occupying the number one, three and five positions in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Top Fuel point race, while Pedregon begins Sunday’s action in fourth-place in Funny Car.
