Topeka, Kan. (Sept. 29): After waiting two weeks to continue her rookie Top Fuel season, Colorado native Melanie Troxel used the first day of qualifying for the Advance Auto Parts Nationals to put her Exide Batteries dragster in the top half of the field.

Troxel's first run of the day was a tire spinning 4.691 e.t. at 292.01 mph. "I shut off a little early because of the tire spin at the top end of the track," said Troxel, "it's the first run of the day and it's not worth hurting any parts."

Troxel's second qualifying effort was an improvement as she ran the quarter mile in 4.645 seconds at a speed of 308.07 mph. That run put her in the No. 6 qualifying position at the end of the first day.

"We had some tire spin again and it put a cylinder out," said Troxel, "we should be able to run quicker yet."

Troxel's teammate, Tony Schumacher qualified No. 3 with a 4.633 second run. Troxel will have two additional attempts to improve her position on Saturday as her team prepares for Sunday's final eliminations.
