Tony Pedregon Qualifies Second For NHRA Summer Nationals in Topeka

Topeka, Kan., May 29, 2004 - Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon qualified the Quaker State/"Shrek 2" Chevrolet Monte Carlo second with his run from Friday night of 4.798 seconds at 320.66 mph. In the first session today, Pedregon slowed to an elapsed time of 11.044 seconds at 80.66 mph but recovered nicely in the second session running an elapsed time of 4.880 seconds at 318.3 mph.

"In the first session we had a wheelie bar adjustment problem which caused the tires to spin," explained Pedregon. "The team fixed the adjustment and we made a great run in the last session with the 4.88. We feel good heading into tomorrow's eliminations. We just need to keep consistent and put four solid runs together tomorrow. We've got a great team that's working together and we're all ready to see that winner circle tomorrow."

Pedregon will face Jeff Arend for the first time this season when final eliminations begin tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Pedregon will be vying for his fourth consecutive victory at Heartland Park where he holds the track record elapsed time of 4.743 seconds.

Television coverage of the NHRA Summer Nationals can be seen on Sunday, May 30th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (ET)
