Burck looking to step up in Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. - Even though drag racing is considered a quarter mile race in a straight line from a standing start, NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car rookie Steve Burck is experiencing first hand the sport's 'learning curve.' After going to the semifinals at his first national event in Houston, he was unable to compete at his next event in Hallsville, Texas due to an engine malfunction. This weekend, at the Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park, in Topeka, Kan., Burck and his team have their eyes set on success once again.
Burck, from Corpus Christi, Texas, feels that with more runs under his belt, he should be able to step his Profax Welding Tools sponsored Avenger up in Topeka.
"Since we're new at this, every track we go to we've never been to before," said Burck. "Every race is a new deal. Qualifying shouldn't be a problem. We'd really like to get into the late stages of the game, so we may have to lean on it a little bit."
With the weather forecast for this weekend projecting cool weather conditions, Burck hopes to set a new personal best this weekend.
"I'd be tickled to death to run a 6.0 or even a 5.90," stated Burck. "I think the car has it in it. I think I'm ready for it. I feel comfortable and I feel capable."
"Well, most guys say they don't worry about who is in the other lane," Burck continued. "But, when you're running a roots [supercharger], and you get down to the late rounds up against some of the heavy hitters, we'll obviously have to take a shot at the tree and try to beat them there."
The Federal Mogul Funny Cars will have two qualifying runs on Friday, with the third qualifying session and first round following on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
