Good luck eludes Skoal Racing Team in Topeka, Kan.
TOPEKA, Kan., May 26, 2002 - Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr. are looking for a littleluck - good luck, that is.
The Skoal Racing teammates had to battle inclement weather when the O'Reilly Summer Nationals began Friday at Heartland Park. Rain ended Funny Car qualifying just after Capps made a tire-shaking run of 10.080 seconds with Johnson waiting in vain to run.
On Saturday, Capps' Green Skoal Racing Camaro came back with runs of 4.980 and 4.908 seconds to take the No. 5 starting position. Johnson, with new Blue Skoal Racing Camaro crew chief Rob Flynn observing, had parts breakage problems on his two attempts. His best run, 5.178, put him in the show briefly, but he wound up 18th overall.
"Things really aren't going our way," said a dejected Johnson. "Getting only two qualifying runs certainly didn't help us, either."
Capps encountered first-round problems in his match against Dean Skuza. Tire shake, followed by tire smoke, forced Capps to abort the run and watch Skuza win with a 4.974 at 306.46 to a 5.949 at 188.81.
"It just kind of pulled the tires loose about one and a half seconds into the run," reported Capps. "I gave the throttle a quick pedal but it didn't help.
Flynn, hired by team owner Don Prudhomme Wednesday, will be in charge of the Blue car and Ed McCulloch the Green car when they test at Heartland Park.
Johnson stayed in sixth place with 423 points while Capps slipped to 10th with 398.
The team returns to action Friday through Sunday in the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers Nationals at Joliet, Ill.
