Howard to search for right combination in Topeka.
TOPEKA, Kan. - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shelly Howard will enter this weekend's NHRA Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event two races behind where she hoped to be at this point. After having two events rained out this season already, the defending Division 4 TAD champs feel they are two races behind where they need to be in figuring out their new car, and hope to close that gap this weekend in Topeka.
Howard, from Tulsa, Okla., and her team have been plagued by severe tireshake all of this season with their new car. Rather than get down, the team has an upbeat attitude, that the more runs down the track, the more of a chance to figure out what the new car likes.
"We really would have liked to make more runs in Joliet," said Howard. "But you have no control over the weather, so it was out of our hands. We'll just go into Topeka with the same mindset we've had all year - try to get the tireshake out of this new car. The more runs down the track, I am confident that Tom [Conway] will get the tune-up figured out."
Under the current situation, Howard feels that a good run with minimal to no tireshake would be a win in itself.
"If we could just get this car to make a run from point a to b without violent tireshake, it would be a huge step in the right direction," said Howard. "With last year's car, Tom had a pretty good idea of what it wanted, where. This car is night and day from the old car, so it's just taking runs down the track."
Qualifying begins at 4 p.m. Friday for the Top Alcohol Dragsters, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
