Park Ridge, Ill. (September 25): As defending NHRA Top Fuel Champion Tony Schumacher continues his run to repeat his title, he knows that starting at the Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka he and his team must be at their best.

At last years, Advance Auto Parts Nationals, Schumacher ran the second fastest speed in the history of drag racing with a 327.90 mph blast. Schumacher wouldn't be surprised if his U.S. Army dragster made a run at topping the best mph under the 90% nitromethane rule, a record he set two weeks ago in Maple Grove.

"The way Dan (Olson - crew chief) has this car running and the way everyone on the team is working together, don't be surprised to see 325 mph before the end of the year," said Schumacher, owner of the top 5 speeds in drag racing.

Schumacher is also locked in a tight points battle with rival Gary Scelzi, who has an 8 point lead over Schumacher.

"We have the championship and don't plan on giving it up," said Schumacher, "from here on out, we are going to have to make every pass and every point count."

With only five races remaining, Schumacher looks to recapture the lead and make everyone chase him and his teammates.

"This isn't like NASCAR where they say you want to be in second until the last lap," joked Schumacher, "I want the lead because at some point when you are out in front, everyone else will start to run out of rounds to catch you."

Qualifying for the Advance Auto Parts Nationals are scheduled for Friday, September 29 at 3 pm and 7 pm and Saturday, September 30 at noon and 4 pm. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, October 1 at 10am. TNN will televise the Advance Auto Parts Nationals. Check local listings for times.
