POST-RACE NOTES: WESTERN AUTO PARTS AMERICA NATIONALS PRESENTED BY SLICK 50, MAY 29-JUNE 1, TOPEKA, KAN.
TOP FUEL *The Top Fuel dragster owned and tuned by Alan Johnson has won at least one round of eliminations at the last 27 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series national events in which it was raced in eliminations. The last time Johnson's car lost in the first round was September 1995, when his brother, the late Blaine Johnson, lost to Larry Dixon at the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Blaine Johnson won at least one round at the last four events of 1995 and 14 events in 1996 before his death in a qualifying crash at the U.S. Nationals. Gary Scelzi has advanced to at least the semifinals in all nine races this year in the Team Winston Dragster, owned and tuned by Alan Johnson.
FUNNY CAR *Whit Bazemore became the first Funny Car driver to record four consecutive 300-mph speeds during eliminations this season. Bazemore, from Indianapolis, drives the Team Winston Ford Mustang. John Force last achieved the feat at the Sears Craftsman Nationals in September 1996 at Heartland Park Topeka.
*Funny Car driver Al Hofmann did not compete at this event due to side effects from medication prescribed to him since suffering a broken right arm and lacerated left hand in a crash after winning the Mac Tools Gatornationals in March at Gainesville, Fla. Cory Lee served as substitute driver for Hofmann. Lee also is crew chief for the Pioneer Electronics Dodge Avenger driven by Tom Hoover. Lee did not qualify for this event in the Hofmann Racing Pontiac Firebird.
*Tom Hoover returned to driving the Pioneer Electronics Dodge Avenger at this event after missing four consecutive events due to heart-bypass surgery.
PRO STOCK *Larry Morgan had won just one round of eliminations in his Raybestos Pontiac Firebird this season before advancing to the final at this event. Morgan, from Newark, Ohio, won a round at the Fram Nationals in mid-April at Atlanta. -30- 6/3/97-WA5-084
