TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 29, 2000) - Nine-time NHRA national event winner Scott Geoffrion led the way for the Dodge Motorsports and Team Mopar Pro Stock contingent following the first day of qualifying for the Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka today.
Geoffrion, who drives one of two Team Mopar Dodge R/T's, blasted the southern Topeka quarter mile with a 6.972-second elapsed time at 196.53 mph. The California resident grabbed the eighth slot.
"The car was nice and smooth," said Geoffrion, who has won three national events at HPT. "We're still experiencing some tire spin, which tells me there is a lot more left. We tested last weekend and it has paid off."
Larry Morgan drove the Dodge Motorsports R/T to the 14th-qualifying position with a solid 6.987/196.96 combination.
"We put together a couple of good runs today and have a nice baseline," Morgan said. "I know this thing has more in it, but I'm in pretty good shape after two (rounds)."
The Team Mopar Dodge R/T of Darrell Alderman earned the 15th slot when he laid down a 6.991/196.56 effort. The three-time NHRA Winston Pro Stock World Champion recovered from a difficult first session.
"We couldn't get down the track on the first one," said Alderman, who shut his machine off right after launching in round one. "We came back and had a nice effort. The car was still spun a little bit, but we're getting better."
Todd Patterson and his Dodge Motorsports Dakota R/T rushed to a 7.637/175.59 outing and the 11th-qualifying position in Pro Stock Truck.
"We had a nice effort in that last run," Patterson said. "The truck ran well in the right lane and I'm pleased with our first day."
Dale Eaton and the Team Mopar Dodge Dakota R/T missed the field after a 7.675/174.82 effort and Craig Eaton, driver of the other Dodge Motorsports Dakota R/T, posted a 7.714/173.21.
The Matco Tools/Mopar Parts Nitro Funny Car entry of Dean Skuza struggled in the first day of qualifying after smoking the tires in the first two runs. Skuza failed to make the top 16.
