Etterman and White score fourth national event win in Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. - In one of their strongest performances of their career, team owners George and Jane Etterman and team driver Marc White put the Bars Leaks NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car in the winner's circle of this weekend's O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. The win was the fourth national event win for the team, and happened at the site of their first win five years ago.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., qualified the Bars Leaks Firebird No. 2 in the field with a 5.663 at 252.28 mph. In round one, he defeated Kevin Richardson with a career best 5.630 at 254.14 mph and then took out Thomas Frickenschmidt with a 5.685 at 254.81 mph in round two. In the semifinals, White beat the No. 2 man in the world last year, Steve Gasparrelli with a 5.663 at 253.52 mph.
In the final, White would square off against Cy Chesterman, who had also been consistently locked in the 5.60's all day. The race was over quickly as Chesterman's mount had problems, giving White the easy win. White added an exclamation mark to the win with a 5.676 at 253.28 mph.
"It was definitely a good day for this team," said White. "This was a team victory. George, Jane, Timmy and Danny all gave me an awesome hot rod to drive this weekend. We only made one run out of the 5.60's all weekend, a 5.73, and didn't hurt a part all weekend. We're very happy to get the win, and happy to put our sponsors Bars Leaks, Splatt Bug Remover, Haulmark, Michigan Kenworth, InsideTopAlcohol.com, NRC Conversions, Valvoline and NGK in the winner's circle."
"For the second week in a row, there was Bars Leaks cars in the finals of the alcohol classes," White continued. "Unfortunately Bill [Reichert- driver of the Bars Leaks Top Alcohol Dragster] lost in the final, but I think the day is coming soon when we'll see an all Bars Leaks winner's circle."
The win moves White into eighth place nationally. White and the Etterman Racing team hope to continue the level of performance they enjoyed this weekend.
"Our performance this weekend was just a result of refinement of our normal setup," commented White. "We've been working real hard to get to this level. I wish we could have got here sooner, but we'll take it just the same. The key isn't to be happy with winning this weekend, it's keeping this level of performance up the rest of the year."
