White suffers tough loss in round one.
TOPEKA, Kan. - After fighting problems in qualifying, NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Marc White and the Etterman Racing Team lost a close match up with Bucky Austin in round one of this past weekend's O'Reilly Summer Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., qualified the Etterman Racing Firebird 15th in the field with an off pace 6.145 at 175.73 mph after rain shortened qualifying to only two sessions. In round one, he faced the task of running No. 2 qualifier Bucky Austin. The team gave it a valiant effort and stepped up to a 5.745 at 250.69 mph, the third quickest run of the round, but even with a sizable holeshot off the line, was not enough for Austin's 5.664 at 253.47 mph, the quickest of the round.
"We just got behind in qualifying, and that is what bit us," said White. "On the first run, we missed the tune-up, and shook the tires real hard, so I shut it off knowing we had another session. On the second run, it was on a real nice pass, like a .68 or .69, and the blower belt came off in high gear. The strange thing is, it was only the sixth run on that belt, and we usually put anywhere from 12 to 15 runs on a belt, so that was less than half of it's life cycle. That put us 15th in the show, and we had to run Bucky, and the rest is history. Bucky is a real tough customer, and we gave him all we could."
The Etterman Racing Team's next race will be the Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing at National Trail Raceway just outside of Columbus, Ohio. White feels that despite the team's early exit this past weekend the team still has high spirits heading into Columbus.
"The car is still running good, we just got behind the eight ball in qualifying," stated White. "The best thing, is it is not eating a bunch of parts like it was early on in the season. We feel like we have as good a chance as anyone going into Columbus. We're on the right track, now all we need is a few breaks to help us along the way."
