Herbert qualifies in the heat of the day in Topeka

TOPEKA, qualifying: Doug Herbert overcame heat and tricky track conditions to qualify the Snap-on Tools Doug Herbert Performance Top Fuel dragster for his 56th consecutive NHRA national event on Saturday at the O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas.

The weather in Topeka was a sharp contrast to the cold and rain at the previous event in Columbus last weekend. The Summer Nationals were graced with warm temperatures and a constant breeze. Herbert shook the tires on his opening qualifying run Friday afternoon but returned for the evening session and posted a 4.798 at 291.13 mph in the Snap-on dragster. Herbert finished the first day of qualifying in the No. 13 position with two qualifying sessions scheduled for Saturday.

Saturday featured another Chamber of Commerce day in Topeka and the fans came out in droves to Heartland Park to check out the quarter-mile action. The weather was hot for the third round of Top Fuel qualifying with cloudless skies and a sun-baked track. A stiff breeze was blowing straight down the track towards the starting line as Herbert staged the Snap-on Tools dragster. The car left hard but shook the tires just off the starting line, slowing to an 8.582 at 95.55 mph. Herbert dropped to 15th on the qualifying ladder with one qualifying session remaining.

"Dougzilla' made his best run during the heat of the day on his final qualifying pass with a 4.797 at 305.91 mph to secure the No. 15 position. Herbert will face Cory McClenathan in round one on Sunday for the second race in a row and the third time this season. The pair has each won once in head to head competition.
