HERBERT LOSES TO KENNY BERNSTEIN IN QUARTERFINALS AT TOPEKA

TOPEKA, Kan., May 15, 2003 - Doug Herbert was disappointed with the way his race day ended Sunday at the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

He was leading Kenny Bernstein - yes, he returned to the driver's seat because his son Brandon injured his back in an accident last week at Englishtown, N.J. - when the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster spun the tires and the engine dropped a cylinder.

Bernstein's dragster also was suffering from tire spin, but all eight cylinders worked and the result was his win with a 4.689 at 312.50 mph to 4.718 at 310.77.

Herbert left the starting line first (.057 to .075) and "I didn't see him until the tires started to spin," he said. "For some reason we have a consistency problem on race day. We're going to try and figure out what's wrong."

Herbert qualified seventh, 4.602 at 315.05, his best of four 4.60-second qualifying times. He eliminated Scott Weis in a close first-round match, 4.703 at 306.40 to 4.731 at 252.82.

Herbert slipped to fifth with 481 points.

The Snap-on team will return to competition Friday-Sunday at Joliet, Ill., in the Route 66 Nationals.
