Herbert Ready for Important Race at Heartland Park
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 28, 2008) With eight races of the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season in the books, Doug Herbert, owner and driver of the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster, readies himself for the NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka with sense of determination.
With several quarterfinal appearances and one semifinal appearance in those first eight races, Herbert and the SnaponFranchise.com team are determined to make a strong showing in Kansas.
"The crew has been hard at it back at the shop this past week," said Herbert. "We stayed and tested on Monday after Bristol, and brought what we learned back to the shop.
"The crew chiefs (Kevin Poynter and Keith Stewart) took that information and got to work at the shop on the blower dyno and clutch dyno. I think we figured out a few things.
"The SnaponFranchise.com car has been running respectably during qualifying, but the gremlins have gotten us during eliminations the past few races. We are hungry for the championship and we won't let this kind of stuff keep happening."
Herbert's hunger for the championship comes in part from the tragic automobile accident that took the lives of his two sons, Jon and James, in January of this year. He has dedicated his 2008 season to his boys, and wants to make them proud by winning the crown jewel of drag racing: the NHRA Top Fuel championship to go along with his four IHRA championship titles.
"I want to win the championship for my boys," said the veteran driver, "and there is obviously no better way to move up in the points and fight for the championship than to win a race. We put the Snap-on car in winner's circle here in Topeka back in '99. I say it's time we do it again."
