Tire smoke slows Herbert in first round at Topeka.

TOPEKA, Kan., May 26, 2002 - Doug Herbert thinks he's watching the same B-movie while he's competing in NHRA Powerade Series events.

It consists, for the most part, with Herbert qualifying only to have the tires on his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster begin spinning before he's halfway through the first-round run. And he loses.

After battling inclement weather conditions in Friday's opening day of the O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park - and not getting any runs in - Herbert put his car in ninth place with a 7.787-second, 311.63-mph run on his last attempt Saturday.

The same race-day scenario that has occurred several times this season returned Sunday morning when Herbert was second to Doug Kalitta. Herbert had a slight head start but it all vanished when the tires began trailing smoke. His car slowed to a 4.901 at 275.22 mph. Kalitta won with a 4.734 at 311.20.

Herbert and crew chief Johnny West planned to test Monday morning in preparation for the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers Nationals, May 31-June 2, at Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, Ill.

Herbert is ninth in points with 372.

Qualified: No. 9, 4.787 seconds at 311.63 mph

First round: Doug Kalitta def. Herbert

Pro Winners: Darrell Russell , Top Fuel; Tony Pedregon, Funny Car; Troy Coughlin, Pro Stock
