TOPEKA, Kan. (May 24, 2003) -- After qualifying No. 1 in Friday's opening session, David Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/Skill Clean Top Fuel Dragster, ended the first day fourth on the qualifying grid for the 15th annual NHRA O'Reilly Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX.

On Friday afternoon, Baca blasted down the Heartland Park Topeka quarter-mile with pass of 4.585 seconds at 317.42 mph, to move to the head of the class. Closing out qualifying on Friday evening, Baca, from Brentwood, Calif., ran 4.689 seconds dropping to third entering the final two qualifying sessions.

Saturday found Baca smoking the tires in both sessions of the day and coasting to 6.879 second pass at 113.43 mph in the opening pass, then 7.360 seconds at 110.65 mph in the final session, just prior to the rain.

"We're where we wanted to be -- in the top half of the field," said Baca. Now we want to take it to the next level and win this thing. We ran well on Friday and must have performance like that tomorrow to put ourselves in a position to have a chance at the title. Johnny West (crew chief) will review all the computer data and have us ready to go for eliminations."

Baca's opponent in the opening round of eliminations which begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow will be Rhonda Hartman-Smith. Hartman-Smith qualified 13th with a pass of 4.687 seconds at 311.92 mph.
