Mechanical problem ends David Baca's day

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 25, 2003) -- After qualifying fourth for today's eliminations at the 15th annual NHRA O'Reilly Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX, David Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/Skill Clean Top Fuel Dragster, had a clutch malfunction and lost to Rhonda Hartman-Smith in the first round.

Baca and Hartman-Smith left together at the green light, but by the 330-foot mark Baca's mechanical problems began and his 6000-plus horsepower dragster lost traction with the Heartland Park Topeka track surface and Hartman-Smith raced away to the win light.

As he analyzed computer data, crew chief Johnny West indicated that the team is dealing with the clutch system and is working toward finding the proper set up for the next race in Chicago.

Baca remained in seventh in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings after nine of 23 events. He now has 442 points.

It's the third of three races on consecutive weekend for Baca and the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports/American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage/YP.net Top Fuel Dragster as the 6th annual NHRA Lucas Oil Route 66 Nationals unfolds May 29 - June 1 at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.
