Input shaft ends McClenathan's day at Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 30, 2004) -- Cory McClenathan, a hot driver over the last three races, ran into one of the hottest, if not the hottest, driver on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series in the person of Doug Kalitta in the quarterfinals of the O'Reilly Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX.
McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products dragster, broke an input shaft and ruined a new clutch set up then coasted to the finish line in 6.350 seconds at 121.79 mph. Meanwhile, Kalitta, who won the Chicago event last weekend, ran a track record elapsed time of 4.487 seconds at a speed of 329.91 mph.
"Our numbers were good all weekend and the run against Doug Kalitta was no exception," said McClenathan, who qualified No. 1 at this event. "We knew we had to step up and he took a shot at us. Our numbers were right there with him but unfortunately we had an input shaft break. That's just wear and tear I guess. We've probably been going from A to B too much. Usually, we can get 25 runs from an input shaft. Todd (Smith, crew chief) told me we had only 16 runs on this one.
"It's a bad deal for us but we've been on a roll through the last three races. We've pick up points and feel that we have a pretty good solid racecar. They all know we're here."
In the POWERade Top Fuel point standings, McClenathan, who won Atlanta two weekends ago, move up one position to No. 4. He now has 523 points.
"That's a cool thing. I watched (David) Grubnic go out in the first round. That was perfect for us. We're just trying to qualify well and go some rounds. We'll just keep marching on," concluded McClenathan, who is 21 points in front of Grubnic.
Next up for Cory Mac and the Carrier Boyz Racing team will be the Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing. The event takes place at National Trail Raceway, June 10-13.
