TONY SCHUMACHER TO RETIRE AT END OF SEASON WILL PURSUE A CAREER IN HOCKEY

CHICAGO, Ill., April 1 -- U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher announced today he will retire at the end of the 2009 NHRA drag racing season in favor of pursuing a career in professional hockey.

A known hockey enthusiast, Schumacher and his hometown Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League have agreed to terms on a three-year contract that will initially offer the six-time world champion the opportunity to play in the organization.

"There was a scout at one of my recent club games and I guess he liked what he saw," offered Schumacher. "I really love the sport and I'm certainly not going to let this chance of a lifetime slip by."

Schumacher will attend the Blackhawks training camp next September and then be assigned to one of their minor league teams for further evaluation.

"I hope to make it up to the big club sooner than later," he added. "I look forward to following in the footsteps of guys like Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull. They were my heroes growing up."

If his playing career does not pan out with the Blackhawks, Schumacher said there's a fall back plan already in place.

"They said I'm guaranteed a front office job, so at least I have my bases covered," he said. "I have no plans to return to drag racing, that's for sure. Hockey is my true passion."
