Park Ridge, IL (April 23, 2000): One year ago, Tony Schumacher and his Exide teammates left for Richmond, Virginia with three semifinal appearances, one runner-up and second in NHRA Winston Championship points. Now the reigning NHRA Top Fuel Champion is leading the way to the moto1.net Nationals in Richmond, April 27-30, with one win, three runner-up finishes, and a 66 point lead over Gary Scelzi.
"We have continued to grow as a team," explained Schumacher, "the more time we have all spent together, along with more data has really made a difference for us this year."
Schumacher has also found that life as the current NHRA Winston Top Fuel Champion has given him less personal time. "Everywhere we go, there are many more media requests than last year. Plus, we have more things that we are doing for our sponsors away from the racetrack."
"That's part of the deal and it's really a lot of fun for me," added Schumacher.
When asked about the points lead, Schumacher stated, "We want to get as many points early on as possible, before we get to the heat of the summer. That's when tracks can get real tricky and you never know what will happen."
After spending three days in New York City making appearances for Exide and Easter weekend with family, Schumacher is ready to continue his defense of the Top Fuel title in Richmond. Schumacher is scheduled to appear the NHRA Press conference on Wednesday and then will travel back to Richmond to be an in studio guest on a local Country radio station.
Qualifying for the moto1.net Nationals are scheduled for Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29. Final Eliminations are scheduled for Sunday, April 30 at 11:00 ET. Eliminations will be televised on TNN, April 30 at 4:30-6:00pm (ET and PT).
