NHRA Funny Car Champion Tony Pedregon Nominated For 2004 ESPY Best Driver Award
GLENDORA, Calif. (June 23, 2004) - Defending NHRA POWERade Series Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon has been nominated in the Best Driver category for the 2004 ESPY Awards, it was announced recently.
Pedregon, a second-generation racer from Chino Hills, Calif., was nominated alongside '03 IRL champion Scott Dixon, six-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher and NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth.
Pedregon raced to eight victories and eight No. 1 qualifying awards last season to claim his first NHRA Funny Car championship, ending John Force's unprecedented streak of 10 consecutive championship titles.
Pedregon is the second NHRA driver to be nominated for the ESPY Awards. Force, the team owner of the car Pedregon drove to his championship, was nominated for the ESPY Best Driver award in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
"It's a tribute to the sport of NHRA Drag Racing to be recognized once again at the ESPY Awards," Pedregon said. "To be nominated also is a tribute to the team that I won the championship with last year. It's a season that I'll never forget. We won the first six of 11 races and really had an impressive year. I feel very honored to be included among this impressive group of drivers representing NHRA and the Funny Car category for the 2004 ESPY Best Driver award."
