Tommy Johnson Jr. Completes 2005 Testing
CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 1, 2005) -- Five-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Don Prudhomme-owned Skoal RacingSM Funny Car concluded preseason testing on Tuesday at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix.
After five consecutive days of testing at the Arizona drag strip, the Mike Green-led race crew is confident with the results as the team prepares to make a strong run in NHRA Funny Car competition in 2005. Johnson made three test laps Tuesday in his Chevy flopper recording a run of 4.904 seconds at 315.64 mph on his second pass before the veteran driver powered to a performance of 4.843 at 317.57 on his final test run. With both the Las Vegas and Phoenix test sessions, the Skoal Racing team completed nine days of preseason testing.
"What I like is that we got to run in some conditions that many teams didn't see throughout the weekend here at Phoenix and that we got down the race track in all kinds of conditions from very cool to warm like today," Johnson said. "We found a problem, fixed it and proved that we fixed it with our 4.79 yesterday and our runs today. It's nice to be able to find the problem, fix it and know it's gone. That's why we test. The confidence level is pretty high in our camp and that's what it takes going into Pomona (Calif.). I'm confident we can roll off the trailer and make a 4.7-second pass next Thursday."
The Skoal Racing crew will service the race car in Phoenix before heading West on I-10to the Golden State to begin the 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season, Feb. 10-13, at Pomona (Calif.) Raceway with the 45th running of the historic Winternationals.
