Rain Shortens Saturday Testing at Phoenix

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Jan. 29, 2005) -- Tommy Johnson Jr. made only one pass behind the wheel of his Skoal RacingSM Funny Car Saturday at Firebird International Raceway near Phoenix before a windstorm and persistent rains throughout the afternoon canceled the rest of the day's racing action.

Johnson and Don Prudhomme's Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo team are preparing for the 2005 NHRA season for the second consecutive weekend after Johnson recorded the quickest run of his career (326.89-mph) last weekend in Las Vegas. Johnson made only one pass early Saturday afternoon as his Chevy flopper shook the tires causing the five-time NHRA winner to shut off early.

"We were the next car in line to makeapass and I would have liked to have had the opportunity to make another run," Johnson said. "We have a pretty good idea what the car wants to do, so it's disappointing only getting one run in today. It kind of feels like we're at Reading (Pa.) with the rain and cold weather instead of in Arizona."

The Skoal Racing crew will resume testing on Sunday at the Phoenix track as Johnson aims to post another 4.7-second, mid-320-mph pass.
