The first day of qualifying for the Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals proved to be a day Tom Martino would rather forget. Coming off their strong performance in Pomona, the CENTURY 21( Racing Team had high hopes heading into the Phoenix event. However, their initial efforts were hampered by a series of mechanical maladies that left them outside the top sixteen halfway through time trials. However, with two more chances to make the field remaining on Saturday, the Martino crew worked late into the night to ensure they could take full advantage of the opportunity and make up for lost time.

"Today was just one of those days. In the first session, we burnt two pistons almost immediately, but still managed to run a 6.97. Unfortunately, we ran into a problem at the scales after the pass, and our time was disallowed. We then swapped motors for the second run, but broke an oil fitting during the burnout.

"The biggest loss from today's problems was losing the data from the second pass. Even so, I know we'll be fine. Today was just a small bump in the road. We may lose a little sleep tonight, but I'm confident tomorrow will see us putting the CENTURY 21( Firebird back on top where it belongs."
