Stull scores round win in debut with Freeman Motorsports

BRAINERD, Minn. - In just their first weekend in competition, the newly formed team of driver Tina Stull and owner/driver Richard Freeman made their mark on the NHRA Competition Eliminator field at this past weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. Stull, who pilots the Interstate Batteries/Mac Tools Chevy Cavalier out of the Freeman Motorsports stable, had a career weekend, qualifying in the top half of the field and scoring her first round win in national event competition.

Stull, who is a volunteer firefighter in Boerne, Texas, qualified her E/ Super Modified Automatic 2004 Cavalier 12th in the 32 car field with a 8.690 second run which was .540 of a second under her class index. Competitors in NHRA's Competition Eliminator are paired off a handicapped starting system according to what type of car they run, which puts them into a certain class. After qualifying, Stull defeated Eddie Smith with another strong 8.701 (.52 under). In her second round battle with heavy hitter Brian Browell's D/Dragster, Stull pulled the trigger just .013 of a second too quick, resulting in a redlight and disqualification. Nonetheless, Stull is still ecstatic with her debut with Freeman Motorsports.

"I'm really happy with the weekend," said Stull. "Would I have liked to gone further, of course. Richard and the guys at Freeman Motorsports have given me a topflight ride, and been very cooperative. I'm really starting to get comfortable in the car, and I think that's where the redlight came from. We'll work on that, and hopefully we'll get this Chevy Cavalier in the winner's circle for our great sponsors Interstate Batteries, Mac Tools and Supreme Lending. Also, the more rounds we go, the more awareness we can raise for the Paralyzed Veterans of America."

The next outing for Stull and Interstate Batteries will be the Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan., Aug. 26-28. From there, the team will head to Indianapolis, for the biggest race of them all, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
