1-FOR-2 ON A SUNNY SATURDAY, SO WILK SITS SIXTH
Saturday at the Summer Nationals started in a very similar fashion to Friday's overcast and cool conditions, but before the pro classes could get on the track the clouds departed and the temperature went up. By Q4, it was a hot day befitting the name of this race and the Funny Cars were not only slowing down, they were finally smoking the tires.
Tim Wilkerson made a fine pass of 4.152 in Q3, but then spun the hoops on his final effort. He will race from the No. 6 position, and will face Matt Hagan in round one.
"What a difference 24 hours makes, in terms of the weather," Wilkerson said. "By this afternoon, you wouldn't hardly believe how much cooler it was just last night because it started to feel like the middle of summer and the track was heating up. We made a real nice pass earlier in the day, but the track was just cool enough then to allow you a little more leeway.
"On the final one, we were pushing the envelope a little, to find out what the track would take once the sun got on it pretty steady, so at least now we know what it won't take. We didn't get the luckiest draw in the class, having to run Hagan, but everyone is tough out here and we're just going to race the track tomorrow, anyway. If we have enough to beat Hagan and his guys, so be it, but we're not going to change how we tune the car just because we're facing a guy who's way ahead of us in points. We'll just try to put our best lap on the board, and we'll see what that does for us."
Hagan sits in the No. 5 spot on the Full Throttle points list. Wilk is 11th.
