WILK'S No. 3 SPOT MAKES IT A FEEL GOOD DAY
Tim Wilkerson will admit that the 2011 season has not gotten off to a rip-roaring start for him and his Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang team, but as he also added when questioned about it, "We've only made seven laps. It's not like we're still running bad in June."
After making some changes post-Gainesville, Wilk showed up in Vegas ready to feel better about his race car, and also ready to post the numbers to back that up. On a very hot track at The Strip, he joined the masses with a tire smoker in session one, on Friday, but then came back to post the third-quickest run in Q2, clocking in at 4.196 seconds. The lap landed him in the No. 3 spot overnight, and earned him a bonus point.
"It was so close to making it on the first lap it was pitiful," Wilkerson said. "I mean it had to be a 50/50 toss up on the first one, whether it was going to smoke the tires there or go all the way, so we felt we had a pretty good idea of what to do for Q2. The track temp was up around 131 or thereabouts, but we found some runs from last year that were very similar, in terms of conditions, and we tweaked her and massaged her just a bit, then we talked real nice to her, and the car did just what we wanted it to do. It feels good to come back to the pit on Friday and know you're in pretty good shape. That was our goal coming in here, and so far so good."
