NHRA TO DELAY PERFORMANCE RESTRICTIONS IN TOP FUEL, FUNNY CAR GLENDORA, Calif. -- The National Hot Rod Association will delay the introduction of performance restrictions in Top Fuel and Funny Car racing, giving the sanctioning body and its race teams more time to devise the ideal formula for reducing speeds. Testing started last month at Texas Motorplex near Dallas with the Miller Lite Dragster owned by Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and driven by Larry Dixon. NHRA will continue to work with an independent consultant and race teams to explore all performance-restriction options. "The initial effort to determine the best and most effective method to limit performance has proven to be a very complex project," said Graham Light, NHRA senior vice president of racing operations.. "Cost containment, ability to enforce rules, equipment availability and the timing of the project dictate a need for more research and field testing to ensure that any change designed to restrict performance not be arbitrary. The proper resolution has to be one that lies in the best interest of the competitors and the sport." As NHRA continues to study performance restrictions, Goodyear is continuing both short- and long-term development activities and is comfortable with the current tire entering the 1998 season. -30-
