In 2009 Bob Tasca III took his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car all the way to the winner’s circle for the first time at Gatornationals.. In 2010 he made it to the final round only to lose to fellow Ford driver Tim Wilkerson. Needless to say the track in Gainesville, Florida holds a very special place for Tasca.
BOB TASCA III – Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car – COMING OFF A RACE LIKE POMONA, ARE YOU READY TO GET BACK BEHIND THE WHEEL AND HEAD TO GAINESVILLE? “Pomona didn’t turn out the way that we had hoped. The conditions went from 40 degrees on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to much warmer on Sunday. We were a little bit nervous as the oil downs kept coming and it kept pushing us further and further back from a time standpoint. The track kept getting warmer and warmer, and the crew chiefs made a lot of changes. The changes we had made didn’t go our way. Robert [Hight] made a great run in that session and took the win, but the good news is it’s not where you start but where you finish in this championship hunt. We’ll get these glitches out of the way here early. I’m excited for Gainesville. We’ll pick up the pieces from Pomona, but we’re really confident in this Motorcraft, Quick Lane, and Ford Parts Shelby Mustang Funny Car that it will get the job done. The best is still yet to come”
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU PERFORM SO WELL IN GAINESVILLE? “With Gainesville, there’s just something magical about the place. It’s a race track that I’m very familiar with. I got my license there in an alcohol Funny Car in Gainesville. I broke the national record there in my alcohol Funny Car. I won my first fuel race there, which I’ll live a long time and never forget that moment. We went to the final round there last year. Someone asked me what the secret is, and truthfully, I don’t know. You don’t prepare any different. You don’t take any race as more important than the next. They’re all important. Gainesville is just one of those places where it’s just magic for me and I can’t wait to get back there. The fans, the excitement it’s one of the biggest crowds of the year. I guess you could call it our Daytona 500. The Motorcraft/Quick Lane car didn’t do too badly in Daytona this year. Hopefully Florida will bring us the same luck that it brought Trevor Bayne and the Wood Brothers.”
AFTER YOUR PERFORMANCE IN POMONA, GOING TO A TRACK LIKE GAINESVILLE MUST BE A GOOD THING FOR YOU. “Obviously we were very disappointed with Pomona. We got behind the eight ball in qualifying. We lost a qualifying round due to weather. The weather was more than a challenge, conditions we will never see again. We might never see those conditions again in years in Pomona. Certainly it wasn’t the outcome for the weekend that we had hoped for. Going to Gainesville, a place where we have done well, I think it gives us a little extra confidence. We have a lot of good data in the conditions we are going to be running in. I can’t get there fast enough. If I could leave there and go there today I would.”
LAST SEASON FORD DOMINATED IN THE FUNNY CAR SERIES. JOHN FORCE WON THE LAST TWO RACES IN 2010 (LAS VEGAS AND POMONA) AND CAPTURED THE CHAMPIONSHIP LAST YEAR. ROBERT HIGHT WON THE FIRST RACE OF THE 2011 SEASON. DO YOU HOPE TO CONTINUE THAT ONE FORD WINNING STREAK THERE THIS WEEKEND? “If we had it our way we would keep the wins in the Ford camp all season long. It’s a very competitive class and it’s going to be a really exciting season. There are just some amazing competitors out there. Robert got the momentum going in the right direction for the Ford teams and I would like to hopefully extend that winning streak this weekend in Gainesville.”
