RAIN TAKES OUT FIRST DAY OF QUALIFYING FOR SCHUMACHER

MADISON, Ill., May 1 - Persistent rain showers forced the cancellation of the opening day of qualifying here Friday for the O'Reilly Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.

While the Pro Stock Motorcycle class and two pairs of Pro Stock cars were able to log first round qualifying times during a rare dry spell, one final rain storm did in the rest of the Pro Stockers as well as the Funny Car and Top Fuel classes.

"Oh well, there's not much you can do about it," said Schumacher, who pilots the U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster. "Hopefully, the weather will be better tomorrow." Schumacher and his U.S. Army team are scheduled to take to the track at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

"It would be nice to get both of those sessions in," he added. "Of course, you always want to qualify well in the first one so you don't have to sweat it out in the last round."

Schumacher arrived in the St. Louis area holding the Top Fuel points lead. He leads second-place Antron Brown by 39 points.

"And, we're bound and determined to leave here still leading the way," he said.
