TEAM HAMMONDS MISSED QUALIFYING BASED ON SPEED
(MADISON, Ill, May 3, 2008) - Team Hammonds missed qualifying for the last qualifying spot based on speed. Recording a tied elapse time of 6.641 seconds, they ran the slowest speed (206.10 mph) of the two causing them to miss the cut.
"We made a concerted effort and picked up with every run. Everything we did improved the car, which is a step in the right direction," said Crew Chief Jerry Eckman. "It's disappointing for the whole team with all the hard work we put into it."
The car got down the track competitively in the fourth deciding round, but experienced some smoking during the run. Going into the run, Eckman felt the bottom end of the third qualifying run needed to be picked-up and remedied the situation with a quick fix of the chassis which allowed the car to fair well. Set-ups were consistent with their baseline configuration and were fine tuned.
"We were excited because we were making headway and improvements. But as a racer, you are never satisfied so we have to continue to keep picking at it because there were a lot of good cars running this weekend," says Hammonds. "And they can came in and qualify. So, we did not to take care of our business."
In the third session of day, Team Hammonds ran a lot better than yesterday's sessions. He recorded an elapse time of 6.663 seconds at 206.75 mph. During the run, they experienced the clutch slipping pretty bad down low, as well as during every gear change, which led to tightening the clutch in preparation for session four.
Continuing on a five-race DNQ streak, Eckman is confident they will qualify in Bristol in two weeks.
"The car is performing better than it has before. We just need to get it back to the shop, put it on the dyno, and make adjustments from our feedback."
Wiley-X Pontiac GXP driven by pro stocker Jim Yates will run in tomorrow's elimination round with a Tom Hammonds engine. He qualified in 13th place, and is in 13th place in overall Pro Stock standings.
