TEAM HAMMONDS STARTS HOPEFUL AT MIDWEST NATIONALS

(MADISON, Ill., May 2, 2008) - After two qualifying sessions, Team Hammonds had a hopeful start at the O'Reilly Midwest Nationals. Sitting in 16th place, they will to make minor adjustments based on mechanics and weather conditions to get them into the qualifying field.

With iffy weather to start the day, the Chevy Cobalt came into the first qualifying session with baseline set-ups, which yielded an elapse time of 6.724 seconds at 204.88 mph. Crew Chief Jerry Eckman was conservative with set-ups for the first run to receive good data to use as the basis of set-ups for the second qualifying round of the day.

The data they received from the first run showed the clutch being a little light, and as a result, the second run clutch adjustments were more aggressive. This decision allowed Hammonds to run an elapse time of 6.704 seconds (204.94 mph) for the second qualifying session. Though not enough to make the 12-man qualifying field for the day, Eckman is confident they have the right combinations for competition and weather conditions tomorrow.

"We were so soft on the first run that we put in a little more [clutch] than we needed for the second run. The tires did spin at the beginning [of the second session], but I am pleased with the runs we made today. Tomorrow is a new day, better weather, and we will be here. Believe me."

"We have a baseline of where we need to be, so I am pretty confident we will run well," says Hammonds.

Pro stock competition will begin tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CST at the Gateway International Dragway.
