CAPPS COLLECTS NO. 4 IN ST. LOUIS QUALIFYING

MADISON, Ill. (May 1, 2010) - Ron Capps drove the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger Funny Car into the No. 4 spot after four rounds of qualifying for the 14th annual NHRA Midwest Nationals, posting a round-quickest lap in the final session of 4.197 seconds at 292.39 mph to earn that spot.

Qualifying was shortened to just three rounds because of rain on Friday. Capps' first two passes produced a 4.262/297.02 (No. 2), and a tire-smoking 7.540/85.63 (No. 5) earlier today. He will face No. 13 qualifier Jeff Arend in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.

"That was quick for that session," he said of his last attempt, "even though the sun came out. We'll take those three qualifying bonus points.

"We're in a little bit of uncharted territory," added Capps, a class-best three-time winner at Gateway International Raceway, just outside of St. Louis. "Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) is working on some things to make the car quicker and that was a big boost for the team.

"The NAPA Dodge felt better, especially for the sun to come out and heat up the track. For us to be able to run as well as we did with that .19 makes us feel good for tomorrow.

"But, you have to remember, in St. Louis this time of year you don't know what tomorrow's going to bring. It could be sunshine, it could be cloudy and overcast skies. So, this was definitely a good way to end qualifying."
