Excitement running high in GEICO Powersports pits
ST. LOUIS (May 1) -- The mood in the GEICO Powersports drag racing pits was noticeably higher Saturday evening after team drivers Morgan Lucas and Karen Stoffer locked up spots in Sunday's elimination racing at Gateway International Raceway.
Lucas wore the biggest smile after posting a 3.918 at 307.30 mph in his GEICO Powersports/Lucas Oil dragster to earn the No. 6 position in Top Fuel. Stoffer was pretty happy herself after running a fifth-best 6.943 at 192.36 mph on her GEICO Powersports Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle.
"This is best car I've had for awhile heading into race day," the 26-year-old Lucas said. "We ran well both days and even got down the track with a really decent ET in Round 4, and that was by far the hottest conditions we'd seen all weekend.
"We weren't exceptionally happy with the way we started the season so the guys have made some big changes with the clutch and the motor in the last few weeks and we're seeing some of that hard work pay off.
"I don't know what the conditions will be tomorrow but I know we're going to place an emphasis on getting down the track every round."
Lucas will open eliminations against part-time racer Troy Buff, who qualified 11th with a 4.005 at 281.19 mph.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Stoffer has a first-round date with Doug Horne. Stoffer has lane choice against the sophomore rider after carding a quicker 6.943 at 192.36 mph against Horne's 7.031 at 188.94 mph.
"This is the most excited I've felt since Gainesville," Stoffer said, harkening back to the season opener in Florida where she set a national ET record. "We've battled so many chassis issues with the bike and the bigger motors have us on a learning curve also.
"We're figuring out how to tame that extra power down here in St. Louis We're making changes and the bike is doing what we want it to do, which is exciting because lately it hasn't been doing that.
"Doug Horne has a great team but this GEICO Powersports Suzuki is due for a win."
