HAGAN STRUGGLES TO QUALIFY NO. 12 IN ST. LOUIS

MADISON, Ill. (May 1, 2010) - Matt Hagan and the DieHard Dodge Charger Funny Car team struggled to earn the No. 12 position in qualifying for the 14th annual NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway, just outside of St. Louis.

The 27-year-old second-season pro Funny Car racer posted his quickest pass of 4.418 seconds at 267.06 mph today, in the second of only three qualifying rounds held this weekend because of rain on Friday. His other laps were an 8.409/79.54 (No. 11) and a 4.603/184.85 in his final try. He pulled out his best lap while pedaling and trying to avoid the wall, impressing the crowd with his ability to recover and record a decent number.

"It's been a tough weekend for us," said Hagan, who won his first nitro Funny Car title in Houston this year. "We haven't been down the track yet and we have a pretty strong opponent in the first round with Del Worsham.

"We have a lot of respect for the guy. I'll just have to get up on my game and make sure that he doesn't leave on us and the rest is up to (crew chiefs) Tommy (DeLago) and John (Medlen).

"We've been testing a lot of stuff this weekend and we finally went back to our old combination that last lap and it was just a little bit too aggressive. I think if Tommy and John can tame it down a little bit we'll be just fine. I'm looking forward to tomorrow and we're going to go have some fun."
