GEICO Powersports rider Stoffer sizes up her chances in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (April 28) -- It's taken a couple weeks of intensive inspection, but Karen Stoffer finally is confident that all the mechanical gremlins have been exorcised from her GEICO Powersports Suzuki.

"We've had some bugs on the bike that we've figured out," Stoffer said. "I'm looking forward to a pure and good race weekend."

Heading into this weekend's NHRA stop at Gateway International Raceway, Stoffer said her bike is close to the powerful form it showed while setting a national record in Gainesville, Florida, earlier this year.

"We know we have a fast bike," Stoffer said. "And now we know what on the chassis was ailing us the last two races. We found two or three elements on the bike that pulled us off our baseline. We fixed it and now we have it back.

"The whole team is excited to race in the shadow of the Arch."

Because of its time on the schedule and the geography of the track, the St. Louis race has always been a mixed bag when it comes to weather conditions. But Stoffer said the GEICO Powersports Suzuki is ready for anything.

"You never know what kind of weather you are going to get in St. Louis," Stoffer said. "It's been so miserably hot there in the past I've seen fire trucks out there cooling the track. We've also seen it cold and windy. Then there's the fog that can roll off the Mississippi. It's crazy, so you have to be prepared for anything."

Stoffer also said the timing of this weekend's race couldn't have been better. It's been long enough since the last bike race in Houston to do the needed work on the bike and give the team a chance to recharge its competitive batteries.

"It's been nice to have time off, and it's been just long enough," Stoffer said. "We're very eager to get back to the track. We've had time to regroup and go through things thoroughly. It's wasn't the long winter hiatus, but it was just long enough."
