St. LOUIS (May 6) - Funny Car driver Gary Densham drew the short straw Sunday when he had to face current points leader Ron capps in the first round of final eliminations at the O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway. Despite elbowing his way into the 10th position after only two, rain-shortened qualifying sessions, Densham's efforts weren't enough to stop event winner Capps.

"We don't have anything to hang our heads over," Densham said. "We qualified well, in the middle of the pack and Capps qualified 7th, that's who we had to race. Not that that is a bad thing, but we knew we had to step it up if we had any chance at all. Unfortunately we pushed it a little too much and lit the hides as soon as the tree turned green."

Capps winning quarter-mile sprint was clocked in 4.813-seconds at 321.27 mph to Densham's tire-smoking 8.627-seconds at 100.86 mph.

"He's not the points leader for nothing," Densham said. "We just downright got beat. That Brut team is red hot right now. But that's the way it goes out here, one team wins for a while and then someone else comes along and knocks them down a notch or two. You wait, we'll have our day soon. I think we are right where we need to be to start going [elimination] rounds."

The Torco Racing Fuels / Racebricks Collectables Impala Funny Car team has next weekend off so they can celebrate Mother's Day with their respective mom's. NHRA POWERade Drag Racing resumes May 18th - 20th at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn with the 7th annual O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals.
