Del Worsham is the defending champion of the Midwest Nationals; last year's win at Gateway was the first of three races the Al-Anabi driver won last season. He defeated Jerry Toliver, Tim Wilkerson, Tony Pedregon and Ron Capps on his way to the winner's circle. Worsham also won at Gateway in 2003; should he win this weekend's race, he would tie Ron Capps for most Funny Car wins at Gateway International Raceway.
Worsham has advanced to the semifinals at each of the last two NHRA events. He has moved into eighth place in the NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car point standings; he trails seventh place Tim Wilkerson by 14 points and leads ninth place Robert Hight by six points.
Worsham has been a solid qualifier so far this season. In the season's first six races, he has qualified second, third, 14th, fifth, seventh and first respectively. Worsham's average qualifying position is 5.33.
" Worsham was the No. 1 qualifier in Las Vegas. He defeated Jim Head and Melanie Troxel before losing to Tony Pedregon in the semifinals. Worsham is still seeking his first win of the season; he won three races last year visiting victory circle in Madison, Ill., Bristol, Tenn. and Richmond, Va.
" Worsham has 25 wins in his Funny Car career; he is seventh on the NHRA's all-time Funny Car wins list trailing sixth place Cruz Pedregon by just one win.
Worsham prior to Gateway International Raceway:
"For the last few races, we've had positive things to say about our Al-Anabi Toyota Funny Car, and that's a good feeling. It's nice to be making progress and moving up in the points. We aren't going down the track every time, but we're going down the track more than we have been so that's progress. We've moved up to eighth in the points, and it's tight so another good weekend in St. Louis, and we could make a solid move in the points.
"Our Al-Anabi Racing Team had another solid outing in Las Vegas. It felt great to be the No. 1 qualifier, and it had been a while since I did that. We've made it to the semifinals for two straight races so the next step is to get to the finals, and then, hopefully, we can win a race sometime soon. We all understand it's a long process, but we're all working as hard as we can to get our car to perform as well as we all know it can and do it consistently. We'll just keep working until we reach the level of excellence we all want for the Al-Anabi team and His Highness Sheik Khalid."
