WITH QUICKEST PASS OF SEASON, TASCA PROVISIONALLY EIGHTH

MADISON, Ill. (May 2, 2008) -- After making the quickest pass of his nitro Funny Car career, Bob Tasca III grabbed the No. 8 provisional qualifying position on Friday for the NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.

"That last run was the quickest that I've ever made in this Funny Car," exclaimed Tasca after exiting his Shelby Mustang at the Top End. "Chris Cunningham (crew chief) is a genius!"

The driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center Shelby Mustang and his team continue to put together solid and consistent qualifying runs, laying down a 4.825 second, 315.71 mph pass on their second trip down the quarter-mile.

"I was joking with Cunningham, I told him that he wasn't a tuner, he was a surgeon," said the rookie driver. "That is his style and approach to this racecar. To not let the car get ahead of us, we want to be ahead of the racecar. He has been very methodical on when to turn the screws for this thing and how much to turn them. And we've come back and looked at the computer and we kind of laugh because there is still a lot left on the table. And for us, that's a good position to be in knowing that tomorrow's conditions are supposed to be better than tonight.

"If you look at the time sheets, you can see just how competitive this class is," said Tasca. "The pack is tight; it's fierce competition out here. When the times are this close, you start looking at reaction times, because drivers have to do their job too. But that's what makes this sport great. It was just a spectacular racing surface out there tonight with the weather being as cool as it was. It was kind of like a kid in a candy store from a crew chief standpoint, because you were able to go out and have some fun and the drivers knew that they were going to be in for one heck of a ride."

Tasca and his team with have two more qualifying runs on Saturday to improve their starting position for Sunday's 12th annual O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals presented by Castrol.
