SPENCER MASSEY WANTS TO CONTINUE STRONG RUNS THIS WEEKEND IN NHRA SUMMER NATIONALS
TOPEKA, Kan., – Spencer Massey and the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel dragster team is on a roll and the Don Schumacher Racing driver wants to continue it this weekend here during the NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
The 28-year-old Fort Worth native and resident lost a close semifinals match with DSR teammate Tony Schumacher last week at Atlanta Dragway, but the third-round results made it seven full passes in a weekend which included Massey’s first number-one qualifier of the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season.
“I just want to keep it up this weekend,” said the 2009 NHRA Top Fuel rookie of the year. “We had seven straight, strong runs in Atlanta, four in qualifying and three on Sunday, before losing a really close one to ‘the Sarge’ (3.890-seconds to Schumacher’s 3.880, following identical .057-second reaction times).
“I want to make it eight-straight rounds in Kansas, keep the FRAM/Prestone dragster going A to B, and not defeat ourselves!”
Massey posted his number-one-qualifying lap, 3.825-seconds at 323.19 miles per hour, in Friday’s second session (after posting the second quickest time, 3.888/315.42, in the afternoon) and held it through Saturday’s two rounds (where he posted runs of 3.923/314.83 and 3.882/316.30, the latter quickest of the final round).
Sunday’s first two rounds were also amongst the quickest of final eliminations: 3.863/317.79 (defeating Pat Dakin) and 3.903/315.27 (defeating Doug Kalitta).
“Todd Okuhara, Phil Shuler (co-crew chiefs) and the rest of the FRAM/Prestone team really have this car running great,” Massey said. “We have as strong a dragster now as there is on the circuit, thanks to them and the resources at DSR.
“I always want to be racing, always have, but the way things are going right now, I want to be in the seat of that mean-orange machine even more!”
The last time Massey contested for the Summer Nationals title here, 2009, he qualified sixth and, after defeating Scott Palmer and Schumacher in the first two rounds, made it to the semifinals, where he lost to eventual-race-winner Larry Dixon. “I’m looking for better results this time,” he said. “I’m sure this FRAM/Prestone dragster will be visiting the winner’s circle this season and Topeka would be a great place for the first one.”
Massey is in fifth place of the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel standings coming into the Topeka race, trailing Del Worsham, DSR teammate Antron Brown, Dixon and Schumacher (respectively).
