SCHUMACHER SETTLES INTO EIGHTH SPOT

SONOMA, Calif., July 24 - Piloting his U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher secured the eighth starting position here Friday during the first day of qualifying for the FRAM-Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway.

The six-time world champion laid down a 3.880-second pass at 308.92 mph during the second session and as a result ended up in the top half of the field heading into the final day of qualifying on Saturday.

"We had a couple of god runs today," said the Chicago-area resident. "I'm happy with the way my U.S. Army team is performing. We're really starting to come around." Schumacher, who captured the last two races at Infineon Raceway, is coming off a final round appearance in Seattle last Sunday. He now holds second-place in the Top Fuel standings.

"We qualified for the Countdown to One last weekend, so these next four races will be all about winning," he added.

After the Sonoma tour stop, Schumacher and his team will move through Brainerd, Minn., Reading, Pa. and Indianapolis before the Countdown to One begins the middle of September.
