JOHNSON JR. MAKES TWO SOLID QUALIFYING PASSES SATURDAY AT SONOMA
SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2005) Six-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to two consistent passes during qualifying Saturday at Infineon Raceway en route to the 15th qualifying position.
Johnson, who entered Saturday in the No. 20 position, opened the day by driving his Monte Carlo to a pass of 5.004 seconds at 293.09 mph to place his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned race car in the 16-car Funny Car field. There were 21 cars attempting to make the cut this weekend at the 18th annual FRAM-Autolite Nationals.
On his fourth and final qualifying attempt of the weekend, the veteran Funny Car pilot powered his Skoal Racing flopper to its quickest run of the weekend when T.J. stopped the Infineon Raceway timers in 4.963 at 307.41 to claim the No. 15 qualifying position. Johnson has now qualified for 30 consecutive races and remains sixth in the Skoal Showdown standings.
"It was all about drama for us today," Johnson said. "It's not that we ran badly this weekend, we just had a few little things that got us. If I had to guess, I think we might have had a bad set of tires. The team did a great job under the pressure and that shows what a tough bunch they are. Sunday is a new day. I like that we have to race (Eric) Medlen because that lets us control our destiny in the points standings."
Johnson will face off against No. 2 qualifier Eric Medlen in the first round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday. Johnson is 1-3 in his career against Medlen.
