JOHNSON JR. LOOKS TO REBOUND SATURDAY AT SONOMA

SONOMA, Calif. (July 29, 2005) -- Following a semifinal performance last weekend at Pacific Raceways near Seattle, Tommy Johnson Jr. and Don "the Snake" Prudhomme's Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car team made two qualifying attempts Friday at Infineon Raceway to open qualifying for the 18th annual FRAM-Autolite Nationals.

Johnson, who ranks fourth in the NHRA Funny Car standings, overpowered the Infineon Raceway quarter mile on Friday's opening pass and coasted to a run of 6.311 seconds. Under the lights at the scenic Northern California facility, Johnson's Monte Carlo got out of the groove and slowed to a pass of 5.837 seconds to place him in the No. 20 position. There are 21 Funny Cars attempting to make the cut this weekend.

"We just missed the tune-up today," Johnson said. "We have a really good race car, and I'm confident that the guys will get things straightened out and we'll make two good runs on Saturday and get this Monte Carlo into the program."

Johnson and the Skoal Racing crew look to make two solid passes and place the Skoal Racing Chevy flopper in the 16-car field when Funny Car qualifying resumes with sessions scheduled for noon and 3:30 p.m. (PT). Johnson qualified in the No. 1 position at the Sonoma race in 1994.
