Day ends in second round for Team Jeg's
A total of 23 Pro Stock drivers and their teams battled over four qualifying sessions to have an opportunity to leave historic Sears Point Raceway as the NHRA Fram Autolite Nationals Champion. The field for raceday was made up of seven Pontiac Grand Ams, five Chevrolet Cavaliers and four Dodges. The sixteen positions were separated by .058 seconds.
Jeg Coughlin Jr. and his Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier started raceday in the No. 1 position. It was his sixth career professional pole position and the first of the season.
Jeg earned his first No. 1 qualifying position at the '98 NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals. The 31-year old has qualified for the last 54 events in what is arguably the most competitive professional class in NHRA Winston Drag Racing.
In the opening round Jeg Coughlin and Larry Morgan went head-to-head. The two Ohio drivers had faced each other five times in their careers prior to this match up. Jeg has turned the win light on all five occasions against the Dodge driver and Pro Stock veteran.
Lane choice went to the Jeg's machine. The reigning NHRA Winston Pro Stock Champion pulled into the preferred left lane to begin his quest for his fourth win of the season and 25th professional victory.
The yellow and black Jeg's Chevy Cavalier rolled into both beams quickly and the Dodge followed. The advantage off of the line went to Morgan by .032 seconds (.439 to .471). By the time the Chevy was to the 330-foot clock it was in front to stay. Team Jeg's turned the win light by .0078 seconds at the stripe. Jeg crossed the finish line with a quicker 6.938 at 199.73 mph.
"We focused on our short falls from Saturday qualifying and made some good decisions as a group. We left a little on the table up front but Team Jeg's came on strong and the win light turned on in the Chevy lane," said Jeg after his first round win.
In the second round Jeg went head-to-head against Mike Edwards. The last time that the two drivers faced off was in the final round of the NHRA Pep Boys 50th Anniversary Nationals, which was won by Coughlin and Team Jeg's.
Lane choice went to Edwards by .023 seconds and he took the right lane. Both drivers are well known for the reaction times and there were plenty of eyes watching as the two Chevy Cavaliers rolled into the pre stage lights.
Both drivers staged carefully. Edwards left the line first and Coughlin immediately ran into problems. The car shut off after the initial launch and Edwards took the win.
"We missed another great opportunity to gain ground in the points. We really had our sights set on finishing the west-coast swing with a bang," said Jeg.
